The Magnificent Coromandel

At Kuatunu, in the Coromandel

This summer we spent some time holidaying in the Coromandel. The Coromandel generally refers to a large peninsula on the eastern side of New Zealand’s north island. Although the peninsula is close to large centres of population such as Auckland to the west and Tauranga to the southeast, its rugged nature means that much of it is relatively isolated, and the interior and northern tip are both largely undeveloped and sparsely inhabited. The Coromandel Forest Park covers much of the peninsula’s interior.

The video below is 17 seconds. I captured it from a hillside spot near Kūaotunu, a small village on state highway 25. The villages of Kūaotunu West and Matarangi can be seen in the distance as the camera pans to Great Barrier Island visible 40km out to sea.
